De Kooy was founded in 1918. Den Helder already had a flying camp for seaplanes in the Mok Bay on Texel, but a location was also needed for planes that land on the ground.
The fighter aircraft, fighter-bombers and scouts of the navy were stationed at De Kooy. Just like the courses for the Naval Aviation Service. In the 1940s the German occupier used the air camp. It was bombed so badly by the Allies that it closed in 1944.
De Kooy was rebuilt in the late 1940s. In 1960 it got a concrete runway. From the 1980s, the air camp was shared with civilian users.
Nowadays the lake is used for civil aviation and it is also called Den Helder Airport.
Most flights at Den Helder Airport are so-called offshore helicopter flights, for example to oil rigs and production platforms.
