Mr. van Lear Black, an American millionaire, chartered a crewed aircraft from KLM in 1927 and 1928. This was, in fact, the first long-term, intercontinental charter in aviation history. Mr. Van Lear Black didn't do this primarily for business reasons, but simply enjoyed flying around for fun.
