The F.VIIB-3m-W was the only modified version of the F.VIIB-3m, and became a float version previously owned by Richard Byrd with the registration NX4204 .

The F.VIIB-3m-W became known for its record trans-Atlantic flight to Europe.

The flight, piloted by Wilmer Stultz and Louis Gordon, and accompanied by the famous aviation pioneer Amelia Earhart.

Although Earhart was a pilot with approximately 500 hours of flight experience, she did not act as a pilot on this flight.

She was, however, the aircraft commander. Hereby she became the first woman to fly across the Atlantic Ocean in 1928.

The trio made their crossing in a Fokker F.VII Tri-Motor named “Friendship”. Their successful flight on June 17th took them from Trepassey Harbour, Newfoundland, to Burry Port, South Wales, in 20 hours and 40 minutes.

They expected however to arrive in Ireland.

During an attempt at becoming the first female to complete a circumnavigational flight of the globe in July 1937, Amelia Earhart got lost somewhere in the pacific
